Proparco Invests €250,000 in EdenCare to Expand Digital Health Insurance in East Africa

Since launching its insurance operations in Rwanda in February 2023, EdenCare has rapidly established itself as a leading player in the country’s private health insurance sector. With more than 30,000 insured members to date, the company has rapidly emerged as a key player in Rwanda’s private health insurance market in less than two years.

Alongside its insurance branch, EdenCare has developed an insurtech platform that automates claims management through artificial intelligence, reduces fraud and enables real-time integration with healthcare providers. Today, the platform is connected to 70% of Rwanda’s healthcare facilities, representing more than 1,300 hospitals and clinics, as well as more than 600 healthcare facilities in Kenya.

While health insurance claims traditionally take around three months to process in the region, EdenCare’s platform enables reimbursements within hours. Faster payments help healthcare facilities maintain medicine stocks, improve cash flow and serve more patients, while insured individuals can access treatment without facing upfront costs.

The investment contributes directly to the digitalisation of the health sector in East Africa and supports several Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

In a context where fewer than 16% of Rwanda’s population has access to private health insurance, and where healthcare expenses remain a significant driver of poverty, expanding access to affordable health coverage can have a transformative impact. By removing upfront payment barriers, workers and their families can seek medical care when needed, while healthcare providers benefit from more predictable and timely reimbursements.
