‘Tell Sid’ For Africa keynote by Sir Kenneth Olisa OBE, the Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London to King Charles III.

Sir Kenneth Olisa, delivered a keynote at the London Stock Exchange on how diaspora capital can unlock Africa’s next wave of economic growth. Drawing inspiration from the UK’s iconic 1986 “Tell Sid” campaign, he argued that the African diaspora should move beyond remittances and become active investors in African businesses and capital markets.

Using Nigerian fintech giant Interswitch as an example of African innovation and success, Sir Kenneth highlighted the significant opportunities available across the continent while acknowledging the challenges that have historically deterred investors, including currency volatility, repatriation restrictions, and market accessibility.  He suggested that bonds could provide a lower-risk entry point for diaspora investors looking to participate in Africa’s growth story.

The keynote also explored London’s evolving role as a global gateway for African companies seeking international capital. Sir Kenneth called on the London Stock Exchange to develop dedicated diaspora-focused investment programmes that connect African businesses with the substantial wealth held by Africans living abroad.
