Jason is a serial entrepreneur, inventor, speaker, author, and recovering consultant. He founded and currently serves as CEO of UTU Technologies, pioneering digital models of trust and privacy. In 2013 founded MARAMOJA Transport, the first taxi app in Africa, and has served as Executive Chairman since transitioning from CEO in 2017. MARAMOJA now supports more than 30,000 taxi drivers across Kenya and is scaling across Africa through a tech franchising model. In 2018, Jason founded UTU House, a vibrant community space for AI and Blockchain projects in Nairobi, Kenya and in 2020 co-founded BitLipa, a free platform for global remittances. He serves on the board of Israid Kenya and advisory boards of a number of African tech startups.
In a previous life, Jason spent 9 years in strategy, design, & development of international donor projects, working across multiple sectors in 40 countries, including significant work in East Africa since 2010. He began his career in strategy consulting and government relations, crafting and delivering policy and advocacy campaigns for a range of US and international clients, including governments, international organizations, and technology & media associations.
He holds a Bachelors’ degrees in International Relations and Spanish/Latin American Studies, with a minor in Applied Physics from The American University in Washington, DC. He is the co-author with the late Julian Bond of “The Price of Freedom,” a collection of oral histories from the civil rights movement.
